The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in seven districts of the country has risen to 57 with three more deaths reported on Wednesday (Jul. 15), according to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. In an update, it also said 111 shelters have been opened in the affected areas, where 4,079 people are currently staying. According to the ministry, seven districts - Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj - remain affected by floods. A total of 57 upazilas, 334 unions and nine municipalities in these districts have been inundated.
Of the fatalities, 32 were recorded in Cox's Bazar, including 19 local residents and 13 Rohingyas, 15 in Chattogram, six in Bandarban, three in Rangamati and one was reported in Moulvibazar. Besides, 40 people were injured following floods and landslides, the minister said. It said relief operations are continuing in the affected areas.
The 2nd session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, which was the budget session, was prorogued on Wednesday after 26 working days. Deputy Speaker Kayser Kamal, who was chairing the House, read out the prorogation order of the President at 6:55pm. During the session, Parliament passed a Tk 9,38,000 crore national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, which is the first budget under the current BNP government formed following the February 12 national election. Earlier, the budget session started on June 7 and Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury placed the budget in the House on June 11.
During the session, a total of 11 bills were passed, while 11 parliamentary committees, including the Special Committee for Constitutional Amendment and nine parliamentary standing committees, were constituted. The bills include the Narcotics Control (Amendment) Bill 2026, the Invest Bangladesh Bill 2026 and the Gambling Prevention Bill, 2026. A total of 278 questions were received for the Prime Minister while he answered 35 questions. The session received 5,031 questions for different ministries while the number of the answered questions was 3474.
Authorities have frozen assets worth Tk 760 billion belonging to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family and 10 business groups in Bangladesh and overseas through court orders, according to Ikhtiar Uddin Mohammad Mamun, head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU). Ikhtiar Uddin Mohammad Mamun disclosed the information today, Wednesday, while speaking at the launch of the BFIU's annual report at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters.
He said authorities had frozen assets worth Tk 570 billion within Bangladesh and Tk 190 billion abroad. However, he declined to disclose the value of assets frozen from each individual or business group. The BFIU chief said, "We are working to recover the assets that were stolen from the country. We hope to share positive news on asset recovery by the end of this year." Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lost power on August 5, 2024 following the student-led mass uprising and subsequently left for India.
In a major move to modernise the capital market, Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission has decided to provide consent to the stock exchanges to introduce 'Script Netting' or 'Intraday Trading'. This initiative aims to make the trading system more dynamic, efficient, and modern, subject to the exchanges ensuring all necessary technical arrangements. The decision was reached during the 1020th commission meeting held at the BSEC office in Dhaka on Tuesday (Jul. 14).
At the meeting, the commission also approved a draft amendment to the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (Margin) Rules, 2025. The draft will soon be published on the commission's website and in newspapers to solicit public opinion. The BSEC approved the Initial Qualified Investor Offer of Royal Footwear PLC, marking the first such approval under the newly formed commission led by Chairman Masud Khan.
