Veteran poet Al Mahmud has been admitted to Ibn Sina Hospital at Dhanmondi in the city. He was rushed to the hospital after he fell sick at the night of February 9. He has been kept at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He has been suffering from multiple diseases including pneumonia and the old-age complications.

Al Mahmud's name will forever shine in the Bengali literature for his masterpiece Shonali Kabin. This is a landmark in Bengali poetry. The book was first published in 1973. It drew much attention at home and abroad.

Al Mamud started his career as a journalist. He was recognised as an outstanding poet after the publication of "Lok Lokantor" in 1963. Books such as "Kaal-er Kolosh", "Shonali Kabin", and "Mayabi Porda Duley Otho" cemented his position as one of the most prominent Bengali poets. He has received several awards for his remarkable achievements.

Around 1954, his first poems were published in the literary supplements of Dhaka and Kolkata. Soon poetry enthusiasts in Dhaka and Kolkata alike took notice.

Liberation War, patriotism, scenic beauty, rustic life, rivers, villages, human relationship, romance, affection, love and struggle are dominant themes in his poetry. He provoked the core of poetic appeal through wielding common/ colloquial words from local dialects and created a new trend. Al Mahmud has published more than 60 books of poetry, short stories, novels, articles and more. He also edited and ran a number of journals, magazines and dailies.
