Dil Afroze Sharif
It is with profound sadness that the family of Dil Afroze Sharif announces her passing on 4 June 2025 at Georgetown University Hospital, USA. She died peacefully at 11:52 am, just three weeks after celebrating her 74th birthday.
A deeply private individual, Dil Afroze preferred to keep her struggles to herself, never wishing to burden those around her. In early April, she was diagnosed with acute leukaemia and admitted to Georgetown University Hospital. Despite receiving attentive care from the haematology and oncology team and undergoing 13 days of chemotherapy, her illness proved too aggressive to overcome.
A Life of Quiet Service
Dil Afroze's life was marked by humble dedication to others. Known for her kindness and generosity, she regularly helped those in need -- whether by delivering groceries, cooking meals, or accompanying elderly women from the Bangladeshi community to medical appointments. She quietly offered support wherever it was needed, embodying the principle of helping others without expecting anything in return.
A Passion for Nature and Sustainability
Her love for gardening and the environment was evident to all who knew her. She found joy in nurturing plants and witnessing the bloom of new life. Ahead of her time in environmental consciousness, she practised simple yet impactful habits such as bringing reusable bags to the store and minimising waste. These values of care and respect for the planet were deeply ingrained in her and are now cherished by her family.
Living Her Values
Education and independence were pillars of Dil Afroze's worldview. She often reminded her family that education is something no one can take away. After relocating to the United States, she defied generational expectations by learning to drive, a rare feat for Bangladeshi women of her era. She lived a full life of self-reliance and skill, engaging in cooking, stitching, knitting, and gardening. Up until weeks before her diagnosis, she kept her mind sharp with puzzles like Sudoku. Her culinary skills were renowned, especially her fresh, puffed luchis and puris, a highlight of Eid celebrations.
Cherished Memories of Travel
Travel was another passion she shared with her daughters. Together, they explored nearly 20 countries across Europe, as well as destinations in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, the United States, and Canada. These journeys forged lasting memories filled with laughter and connection.
Unyielding
Those close to Dil Afroze knew her determination well. Once she made a decision, there was no turning back. While her strong convictions occasionally led to firm opinions, all stemmed from love and care. Her family asks for forgiveness for any unintended offence she may have caused.
A Legacy of Gratitude
Dil Afroze's gratitude for life's experiences and the places she visited remains a treasured legacy. Her family finds solace knowing she spent her final days surrounded by loved ones, sharing stories, laughter and quiet moments.
A Milad Mehfil was held on 20 June 2025 at her ancestral Baridhara home, where family and friends gathered to pray for her departed soul.
Dil Afroze Sharif's gentle spirit, unwavering kindness, and dedication to others will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
